The UVA East Asia Center will be hosting Michael Berry, Professor of Contemporary Chinese Cultural Studies and Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at UCLA, as the first speaker in our fall speaker series. Professor Berry’s areas of research include modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese cinema, popular culture in modern China, and literary translation. His approach is transnational and his work addresses the richness and diversity of Chinese art and culture as it has manifested itself in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other Sinophone communities. His forthcoming book Translation, Disinformation, and Wuhan Diary: Anatomy of a Transpacific Cyber Campaign (2022) traces the online controversy surrounding Fang Fang’s account of the novel coronavirus outbreak and first city-wide lockdown in Wuhan during 2020.
The lecture will be held Friday, September 30 on Zoom, from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. To attend, please register for the livestream here.
