The East Asia Center is pleased to host Paul Groner, UVA Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, for his talk "Eison’s 叡尊 (1201-1290) Reformation of the Japanese Buddhist Ordinations: Sermon Fragments, Autobiography, and Hagiography." The lecture will be held Friday, October 15, from 3:15-5:00 p.m. EST in Maury Hall 115.
Groner’s research has focused on medieval Japanese views of the Buddhist precepts and ordinations, particularly those of the Tendai School. He is the author of Saichō: The Establishment of Japanese Tendai, Ryōgen and Mount Hiei: Japanese Tendai in the Tenth Century, and the forthcoming Precepts, Ordinations, and Practice in Medieval Japanese Tendai.
