Rupa Pillai, senior lecturer in the Asian American Studies program at the University of Pennsylvania, will be delivering a talk for the University of Virginia's Asian American Religious Experience lecture series, entitled "Is Caribbean Hinduism an Asian American Religion?"
A cultural anthropologist, Pillai investigates the intersections of religion, race, and migration, with a focus on Hinduism in the United States. Her current book project, The Other Hindus of New York City, explores how the growing Indo-Caribbean American community uses Hinduism to carve a space for themselves in New York City.
The talk, co-sponsored by the College of Arts & Science's Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Forum on Religion and Democracy and the East Asia Center, will be held Thursday, November 7, from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. in Gibson 341.
