Center Committee Guides

East Asia Center Speaker Series Committee

Overview of committee functions:

 

– Overseeing the selection process for each semester’s Speaker Series events

a. Preparing and delivering a call for speaker invitations to the Center faculty listserv for fall and spring

b. Procuring responses and deliberating on speakers as needed

c. Ensuring adequate geographic regional representation for each season's schedule of speaker events

– Establishing a timeframe for event dates with faculty sponsors/speakers

a. Maintaining updates to event details on EastAsiaCtrResources Collab Wiki calendar

– Coordinating with faculty sponsors or Center administrator to prepare and deliver official invitation letters for invited speakers

– Report on year’s events at faculty meeting at the end of spring semester

Expected time commitment:

– Typically low during the semester

– When preparing the event calendar (summer/winter break) ~1-2 hours a week

– Attendance at year-end faculty meeting (1.5 hours)

 

East Asia Center Graduate Committee

Overview of committee functions:

 

– Overseeing the East Asian Studies M.A. and M.B.A./M.A. programs

a. Previously involved selection process for new applicants (new admissions currently frozen)

– Assisting graduate program students with finding thesis advisors in their area of concentration

– Providing guidance for graduate students in program, during fall orientation

– Committee report at faculty meeting at the end of spring semester

Expected time commitment:

– Fall orientation meeting (1.5 hours in early September)

– Attendance at year-end faculty meeting (1.5 hours)

– Application review is largest component, currently not taking place

 

East Asia Center Grants Committee

Overview of committee functions:

 

– Determining the awards for faculty and student grants, based on applications from fall and spring application cycles

– Deliberating with Center director as appropriate to determine appropriate allocation totals

– Report on year’s award totals at faculty meeting at the end of spring semester

Expected time commitment:

– Application cycles have deadlines on October 15 and March 1; committee meeting following each date (~1.5 hours)

– Attendance at year-end faculty meeting (1.5 hours)

 

East Asia Center Southeast Asia Programming and Grants Committee

Overview of committee functions:

 

– Overseeing the selection process for each semester’s Nelson Lectures of Southeast Asia events

a. Preparing and delivering a call for speaker invitations to the seasia faculty listserv

b. Procuring responses and deliberating on speakers as appropriate

– Establishing a timeframe for event dates with faculty sponsors/speakers

– Determining the awards for faculty and student grants, based on applications from fall and spring application cycles

– Report on year’s Nelson events and grants at faculty meeting at the end of spring semester

Expected time commitment:

– Typically low during the semester
