The UVA East Asia Center and Department of Sociology will host Yang Zhang, Assistant Professor in the School of International Service at American University, for a talk on his new book manuscript describing "Empire and its Enemies: Ethnicity, Religion, and Rebellions in China's Frontiers, 1850-1873."

Professor Yang Zhang’s research covers the areas in comparative historical sociology, political sociology, contentious politics, political networks, philosophy of the social sciences, and China Studies. His book project examines the emergence and development of large-scale religious and ethnic rebellions in the Qing Empire of China during the mid-19th century. Prof. Zhang has published articles in the American Journal of SociologyJournal of Historical SociologyMobilizationVoluntas, and Research in Social Movements, Conflicts, and Change. He received the Charles Tilly Article Award from the Comparative-Historical Sociology Section of American Sociological Association in 2022.
