Drawing from his recent book Ocean of Milk, Ocean of Blood: A Mongolian Monk in the Ruins of the Qing (Columbia University Press 2019), Matthew King will share the story of one Khalkha monk’s failed efforts to render the collapse of the Qing and Tsarist empires, the rise of nationalist and socialist revolutionary movements, and the rationalizing influences of science and public culture sensible to his Tibeto-Mongolian scholastic tradition. The emphasis in this talk will be on ways that attention to “counter-modern Buddhisms” helps illuminate under-researched landscapes of social and religious imagination across 19th-20th century Asia and re-figures Buddhist Studies into a form of critique in the humanities today.
Matthew King is Associate Professor of Transnational Buddhism in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California-Riverside, where he also currently serves as Chair of Asian Studies.
Sponsorship of this event is shared between the East Asia Center, the Virginia Center for the Study of Religion, and the UVA Tibet Center.
