UVA currently enjoys an active Visiting Scholar Agreement with East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, China. By the terms of this agreement, ECNU provides visa sponsorship, reimbursement of roundtrip economy-class international airfare, cash per diem of CNY 1,000 per day for up to 14 days or CNY 14,000 (about 2000 USD) total, and use of an office or laboratory facilities as needed, for up to five visiting scholars from UVA per year.

The Visiting Scholar Agreement comes with no expectation for our visiting scholars to deliver public lectures, organize conferences, or publish papers, rather simply to engage with ECNU faculty in meaningful ways, and likewise there is also no reciprocal necessity for UVA to host visiting scholars from ECNU concurrently.
